Gallants Inauguration

>>> Demise of Original Gallants Story: The story (spread by agents of Baron Wheglin) was that the Gallants fought off some great evil at Braddon Bog, pursued it to the town of Dirte Diaphor in West Riven Run, and there in a great battle killed the mercenary band known as the Bloody Spikes and drove the evil power away – at the cost of their own lives. The few remaining followers gathered up a few stragglers ion their way back to their employer and were reformed under Baron Wheglin’s blessing (its well known that the new group is not simply mercenaries any more). Its rumored that the Baron gave criminals and debtors a chance to redeem themselves and that that element makes up most of their numbers.

Irregular’s Activity

(interaction as Wheglin’s Irregular)
Nils has served as the primary scout for the irregulars when operating in the field. The group relies on the intelligence he brings back from his keen observation skills. A few times its made all the difference in the survival of the group. Nils at first was pretty quiet and serious – his ranger training causing him to take everything personally and at face value. The short time with the Irregulars has brought him a closeness and comradeship he never had – or was expected to have – operating on his own as a Ranger. Nils, while not much of a joker, at least laughs and and has a lightness about him he never thought he would have had in his planned life. The Irregulars have become his new family – and he is especially watchful of his good friend Prothalius, and ALWAYS knows where he’s at in any given situation.

>>> End Story: The story well-told (by the Baron’s agents) of the original Wheglin’s Irregulars was that they were pensioned out, after becoming too well known, and left the area to go north with the remainders of the Green River Brigade under their banner.

Travelling with Mandras from the borderlands of Umbak, through Bar-Innis, and on to West River Run was supposed to be his first mission as one of the High King’s Rangers. Mandras was there to watch and pronounce him fit at the end. While in the lowlands of Bar-Innis, Nils saw much suffering. During the early days of the battle, when Berithor’s troops were everywhere causing havoc, Nils witnessed a battle wherein he saw Prothalius rush to the aid of several farmers who had been attacked by Berithor’s men. Clearly a medic and nothing more, they still attempted to run him down. Nils felt compelled to intervene – breaking the Ranger code of Silent Watching. He rescued Prothalius, but was forced to leave the Rangers. Having no where else to go, he stayed on with his new friend’s family. When the Prothalius was asked to join Baron Wheglin’s new band of operatives by Grace Peregrin, Prothalius would only go if his friend could come as well. Together they joined the rebellion for the lowlands. In the battle, Nils lost nearly everything except his ranger’s camouflage armor which he did not wear – taking instead a regular suit of leather offered by the Baron. He managed to scrounge a few items from the battle field afterward.

Nils, though he has a queer cast about him, appears mostly human except when close up. His distinctive eye color and nails means his lineage is the same clan as Xar (the Farahadeen – near in the forest of Rhyl) – and somehow distantly related to him. He was born to a human mother and father and his gave him recessive heritage were a shock to his parents. Unwelcome in his own community of Umbak, he was given to the church of Aerna to find a home. They, in turn, gave him to the Rangers with whom he was raised. His mentor was Mandras. He spent all his time learning of cultures and peoples of the heartlands. Traveling around Umbak, Dunstrand and the Northern Merchant Cities he learned his trade of seeking knowledge, watching silently, and reporting to his brothers and mentor.

Code of the Gallants

(based on the written, official code)

  1. Duty to brotherhood, faith and guild… but loyalty to group first
  2. Trust and follow the chain of command, inside the group and out
  3. Orders given are to be obeyed. Abuse of command will result in a vote that strips it and gives it to another.
  4. Information is given on a need to know basis; not everything will be shared by the group – this is to protect it more than anything
  5. Respect authority but never without question
  6. In battle, back your companions move – later is the time to question
  7. Never leave anyone behind – even if you have to return
  8. Spend on the group, not outside – monetarily and time-wise
  9. Never volunteer for locals; safety and expectation management are more important than making friends
  10. Never leave the safety of the group without providing plans and details to the leader(s)
  11. Always take the opportunity to gather intelligence on places, people, and items
  12. Never walk into a situation without a plan or way of getting out
